We all know the scramble—your vacation is coming up, your bags are almost packed, and then it hits you: Who’s going to take care of the pets? Cue the last-minute search for a sitter, hoping someone is available on short notice. But here’s the thing: the best time to find a pet sitter isn’t right before you travel. In fact, the best time to find a pet sitter is when you don’t need one at all.
More Than Just Vacations
Pet sitting isn’t just for vacations. Life throws curveballs—illness, work trips, family emergencies. The last thing you want in a stressful moment is to scramble for someone to care for your pets.
Just the other day, I got a call from a gentleman who lives out of state. His dog, however, resides here in Omaha. The person caring for the dog—whether a partner, sibling, or friend—had a mental health crisis and was admitted to a facility that morning. Suddenly, the dog was home alone, and he was frantically calling pet sitters, desperate for help.
Unfortunately, without a meet and greet, most professional sitters can’t take on a new client at the last minute. A meet and greet is more than just a formality—it’s how we get to know your pet, understand their needs, and ensure a smooth transition when you do need us.
Planning Ahead Saves Stress
Imagine if this gentleman had already arranged a pet sitter ahead of time, not just for vacations but for any unexpected need. Instead of panicked phone calls, all he’d have to do is send a booking request. And just like that, his pet would be cared for, stress-free.
How to Be Prepared
Find a sitter before you travel. Establish a relationship now, so you’re not scrambling later.
Book a meet and greet. This ensures your sitter knows your pet’s routine and you’re comfortable with them.
Think beyond vacations. Business trips, emergencies, and unexpected life events happen—having a sitter lined up makes all the difference.
I truly hope that man found someone to help his dog. But his situation is a reminder: pet sitters aren’t just for vacations. We’re here for all of life’s moments—planned and unplanned. The key is being ready before you need us.
